The mindfulness technique works. If you do the technique correctly and consistently, you will get the result.
Mindfulness is simply paying attention to the present moment. It is a skill we can learn and strengthen. Repetition, or training, is an important part of the process.
In order to grow in mindfulness practice, it is important to develop a routine personal practice. What is a routine practice? A routine practice is something you do on a regular and consistent basis, like brushing your teeth everyday.
The most important thing in a routine mindfulness practice is consistency.
Consistent Time: Find a time of day that is most conducive to doing some formal mindfulness practice. It could be after your morning coffee, before bed, or some other time that works for you. The important thing is to stick to that time each day.
Consistent Place: Find a place in your home that is quiet and uncluttered, and make that your mindfulness meditation “spot.” If possible, reserve that area for formal mindfulness meditation only.
Consistent Duration: As we begin mindfulness meditation training, the duration of meditation is less important than consistency of the duration. Even two minutes each day is good, as long as it is consistent. Decide on a duration that feels realistic and supportive for you, and stick to that duration each day. Perhaps start with five minutes and see how it feels. Once you decide on a duration, just practice for that duration each day. Set an alarm for that duration, and just sit until the alarm goes off. Don’t quit early, and don’t keep sitting after the alarm goes off.
