How Do I Work with Strong Emotions?

Mindfulness practice is simply watching everything appear and disappear in this moment.

Emotions, like everything else, appear and disappear on their own. With mindfulness training, we can just watch them come and go, without getting pulled in different directions.

Emotions become difficult and create suffering when they are not able to come and go naturally, when they can’t flow in and out without hindrance.

Mindfulness technique is to allow the emotion to be there, experience it, let it go, and return to the breath. We might even breathe through the emotion, holding it with openness and compassion.

Without suppressing, without clinging, we can simply notice the emotion and sit with it. When the emotion is given space this way to appear and disappear, it is not a problem. It is just another experience to take in, like feeling the breeze on our face, or hearing the sound of a dog barking.
