How Do I Focus My Attention?

Mindfulness is attention training. Although we might look serene and still on the outside, what we are doing on the inside is actually a very active process and endeavor. During mindfulness meditation, we are actively working with our attention, managing our attention, and redirecting our attention.

Attention is like a flashlight. Where we point the flashlight, that is what we see. Where we place our attention, that is what we perceive. Consequently, what we perceive influences how we interpret our reality and respond in each moment.

Mindfulness technique is to turn the flashlight of attention away from thoughts, and turn it toward the breath. In other words, we turn our attention away from fantasies, worries, projections, memories, and evaluations—and turn it toward what is happening right here right now.

Attention, like a flashlight, can be diffused or focused. When working with our attention in mindfulness training, focus the beam of attention on the breath. Center the beam of attention on the breath. Shine the flashlight of attention directly on the breath, in a focused and concentrated fashion.

It is empowering to see for ourselves that we have a choice in how to direct our attention. At any given moment, we can become aware of where our flashlight is pointing, make the deliberate choice to turn it away from thoughts and turn it back toward the breath. Whether we want to do it, and when we want to do it, that is completely up to us.

The good news is, we can get better at it and become more willing to do it with training and practice. The more we bring our attention back to this present moment, the more alive, rich, and connected our lives will be.
