How Do I Live an Authentic Life?

We all desire to live a life that is open, one in which each moment is imbued with freshness and aliveness. Zen Master Wumen said, “The great way has no gate.” Great way means a life that is completely wide open. And similarly, Zen Master Sengcan said, “The great way is not difficult,  just don’t pick and choose.”  What they are both saying is that an open and authentic life is available to all of us.

Picking and choosing refers to a judgmental mind. A mind that is always discriminating and judging unwittingly limits itself. Mindfulness practice helps us return to the mind BEFORE judgment appears. In that moment, we can see clearly and hear clearly, and we can experience for ourselves that “the great way has no gate.”
