The word forgive comes from the Old English word forgiefan meaning “to completely give away.” To forgive means to completely let go.
If we are having trouble forgiving (ourselves or others), could it be that there is something we are not willing to completely let go of?
What are we holding on to, and why? What purpose does it serve by holding on to it? Is it helping us or is it hindering us?
To forgive is like pardoning a debt. In fact, the Latin root word for forgive and forgeifan is perdonare, which means “pardon.” Forgiving means completely giving it all away, completely giving away what we believe is owed to us.
Some of us hold on to this debt for years, even decades. Over time, it constricts our hearts and ossifies our lives. What would it be like to completely let it go, and start afresh?
