How Do I Silence My Mind?

Mindfulness is nonjudgmental awareness of present moment. It’s not about getting rid of thoughts. It’s not about silencing the mind. It’s not about keeping thoughts away or preventing thoughts from arising.

It’s about noticing when thoughts come up, and letting them go. We do this over and over and over again, with patience and compassion for ourselves. If we practice the technique this way, the mind will naturally become quieter.

It’s like a pond with a big rock thrown into it, which creates big ripples. If we stop throwing rocks into the pond and just let the pond alone, the ripples will become smaller and smaller, and eventually the pond will be still, like a mirror. Our mind is like the pond. What would it be like for our mind to be still?
